Engineering Foundation Year

This Foundation Year comprises modules in mathematics, generic physical science and engineering, and study skills, supported by optional subjects chosen to suit your personal  aspirations. The modules have been designed for students from a wide range of backgrounds so please ask us if your current knowledge and skills will allow us to offer you a place on this course.

Successful students move on to a further three or four years of a range of BEng engineering degree programmes alongside those who entered directly onto the first year, knowing that they have acquired the knowledge and skills at a standard at least equivalent to A-level. These courses include: BEng courses in Electronic Engineering, BEng Chemical Engineering, BEng Mechanical Engineering, and also the BSc Computing courses.  There are many other possibilities and opportunities to discuss transfer to other degree programmes both within the School and elsewhere within the university during the year.

The long-term demand for engineers and technologists is high and career prospects are excellent. The Engineering Foundation Year gives you access to our high quality degree courses and the opportunity to become a professional engineer.

What you will study

The compulsory modules help you to develop a knowledge of mathematics and physics at a standard equivalent to A-level and with an emphasis on their relevance to engineering. You will study the mathematical and physical concepts that underpin engineering, including algebraic relationships, differentiation, integration, mechanics, physical and electrical properties of materials. You will also be exposed to a number of computer-based tools which support engineering and will be encouraged to develop your reporting and presentation skills. No previous engineering or IT knowledge is required, and you will be given plenty of hands-on laboratory and computer-centred experience during the year.

From the optional modules you select two areas where you wish to gain knowledge and develop subject specific skills. You may select modules which explore the fundamental elements underpinning Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computing or Website Development.

On successful completion of this preparatory year you will join stage 1 (the ‘first’ year) of the normal BEng programme in an engineering discipline. You will be invited to make your choice during the summer term meaning that you have a full academic teaching year to decide which branch of engineering suits you best.

The course is moderated by an External Examiner, a respected academic with a wide experience of Foundation Year courses and the standards required for successful study on degree courses in engineering and science.  We are confident, from our wealth of experience, that this course will offer a good opportunity to succeed on professionally accredited engineering degree courses.
