Foundation Degrees

Aston University's School of Engineering and Applied Science runs the following work-based, employer-led Foundation Degrees with an engineering focus:

Applicants would normally be expected to be in full-time employment in a relevant industrial sector, and have the full support of their employer in order to benefit from the work-based learning that these programmes offer.

Progression opportunities

Foundation degree graduates who have studied any of the subjects listed below

  • electronics and control engineering (with or without data communications)
  • manufacturing engineering
  • mechanical engineering
  • similar relevant programmes (subject to confirmation of programme details and qualifications).

may progress to either BEng Electrical Engineering Systems or BEng Mechanical Engineering Systems.

Electrical Power Engineering Foundation Degree graduates may progress to our BEng Professional Engineering (Power Systems) degree, which is a work-based learning programme offered on a part-time basis, typically over two years, with limited attendance on campus at Aston University.

Please note: it is recommended that students should have obtained at least a 'merit' at Foundation Degree level to achieve a successful outcome on these programmes.

Our progression programmes are designed to help you develop strong academic and vocational skills to boost your long-term employment prospects, by offering pathways with 120 credits weighting to give a route from foundation degrees to a BEng/BSc. These part-time programmes incorporate work-based learning plus short tutorial and lab classes at Aston or approved locations, and will typically take two years to complete.
