Susan Cadbury Fund

Applications for this fund are currently open for the 2012/2013 academic year.

Lady Susan Cadbury was a strong supporter of the student population at Aston University and sadly passed away in 2010.  In memory of Lady Susan and her involvement with the students of the University, Student Services have a fund for overseas (International & European Union) students who are experiencing financial hardship.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide international and European Union students with short term emergency help for day to day living costs if they find themselves in unexpected or sudden hardship that could have been neither expected nor predicted at the beginning of the academic year in which the application is made.

Previous successful applicants to the Fund have been assisted because of financial problems cause by natural disasters, bereavement and political upheaval.

 It is not possible to be given assistance for tuition fees.

The amount of money available to distribute from the Susan Cadbury Fund varies each year. In 2012-2013 the fund total is £34,000

The Susan Cadbury Fund normally provides a grant, on one occasion only, to assist students through a short term financial difficulty. The awards range from £100 to £2,500 with the average award being £1,000. Occasionally the Fund makes a loan to be repaid at a future date.

Priority is given to students who are in the final year of their course, whether they be an undergraduate, postgraduate taught or postgraduate research student.

Eligibility is restricted to students enrolled on a full time course and paying overseas or EU rate tuition fees. Placement students are eligible to apply.

Part-time students, distance learners, and PhD students with writing up status, are not eligible.

We normally aim to make decisions within a two week time frame.  We sometimes invite applicants to a meeting in order to discuss their application with an adviser.

Because this Fund provides short term emergency help, it will not affect the Tier 4 visa of any successful applicant

Other information:

You can apply at any time during the academic year, and applications will be assessed throughout the year. 

The grant (non-repayable) is normally paid directly into your nominated bank account.

You can apply using the paper application form which can be obtained from The Hub or alternatively using the online application.

All applications to this fund are different but as a general guide the documentation you need to submit with the completed application form are:

  • Evidence to support your unexpected/unforeseen circumstances and when they occurred
  • Documents illustrating how you expected to fund your living costs prior to your change in circumstances
  • Proof of how your tuition fees are being funded
  • 3 months recent and continuous bank statements for all of your accounts ensuring you make a brief note beside any transactions of £100 and over (or equivalent in a different currency) to explain them
  • Your Tenancy Agreement showing your rent payments
  • A photocopy of your visa from your passport (if applicable)
  • A photocopy of your Student ID Card
