Peer Mentoring Celebration Evening May 2013

On Wednesday 1st May 2013, Aston students who have been involved in mentoring their peers were treated to an evening of celebration dedicated to them and their achievements.

Peer Mentors and Postgraduate Mentors received certificates and awards for their involvement in the programmes, and were congratulated by Professor Helen Higson who is a great supporter of mentoring.

During the 2012-2013 academic year over 1800 students have been involved in Peer Mentoring and Postgraduate Mentoring at Aston.

Peer Mentoring

Peer Mentoring is now in its seventh year, with mentors supporting mentees through every step of their Undergraduate study at Aston. It is a positive and flexible scheme that encourages students to share experiences, to be proactive, take control of their own learning, and to make the most of their time at Aston.

Awards were given to the following mentors, who had offered outstanding support to the students they mentored:

Ashlee McIntosh- Pre-Entry E-Mentor of the Year

Tsvetelina Nikolova – Transition Mentor of the Year

Michael Batko - Placement Mentor of the Year

Anastasija Gerasjuka - Outstanding Mentor of the Year

 

We also gave a special mention to Denisa Dumitrascu, who was the winner of the Outstanding Mentor of the Year award last year, and whose mentee nominated her for the award again!

Anastasija’s mentee said:

“I believe the mentoring was a very fruitful arrangement which surpassed any expectations I might have had. It became a frank and honest relationship between the two of us. As quite an insecure person, I find a need for a second opinion – a need for somebody to question, challenge me. This usually leads to my best performance. And that’s what I got! What’s more – it seems that she benefitted from my opinion in a similar way. We learned to trust each other. I most definitely think highly of her and consider her to be my friend. I’ll always know that I can count on her opinion and will cherish this friendship that peer mentoring gifted me.”

Postgraduate Mentoring

This year the achievements of the students involved in the Postgraduate Mentoring Scheme were also celebrated. The scheme was developed in 2011 and is designed to enhance the integration and transition of newly arriving postgraduate students by matching them with more experienced postgraduate peer mentors.

Postgraduate students from all schools of study attended the event and were awarded with mentoring certificates to celebrate their contribution to the Postgraduate Mentoring Scheme and postgraduate community.
