For more Information see the Information and Conditions of Residence Booklet.
Detailed Emergency instructions are posted in each room. These should be carefully read and observed and you should know where your fire assembly point is.
Please be aware that the evacuation procedures vary dependent upon which residences you are in:
William Murdoch Residences A1, A2 and James Watt Residences B1 or B2
If the fire alarm is in your flat: evacuate your flat immediately and go to the fire assembly point (fountain opposite Main Building). Security staff will inform you of the end of the incident.
If the fire alarm is not in your flat but is on your floor: refrain from leaving your flat until the end of the incident or instructed to leave by Security or the Fire Brigade (your flat is protected from fire for one hour from all other flats). Should you leave your flat, make sure you do not impede staff performing their duties at the scene of the incident.
Lakeside Residences
If the fire alarm is in your block: evacuate your flat immediately and go to the fire assembly point (fountain opposite Main Building). Security staff will inform you of the end of the incident.
Please note that in the event of a fire alarm in Lakeside Residences, no access will be authorised in Lakeside Residences compound for the duration of the fire alarm or until deemed safe by Security Staff.
Stafford Tower (applicable for 2012/13 only)
Evacuate your flat immediately and go to the fire assembly point (fountain opposite Main Building). Security staff will inform you of the end of the incident.
In all Residence buildings, there are smoke detectors in all corridors and bedrooms and heat detectors in kitchen/dining areas. Kitchens also have a Fire Extinguisher and a Fire Blanket
A very serious view is taken of any tampering with fire equipment including fire doors. Any student who breaks an alarm glass to raise a false alarm or interferes in any way with fire fighting equipment, including alarms, smoke/heat detectors, fire hoses etc., commits a criminal offence, and will also be subject to the University’s disciplinary procedure.
If a fire alarm sounds, please follow the procedures relevant to your accommodation. Do not use lifts, do not wait to gather personal effects, and do not attempt to re-enter the building until the Fire Authority has given the all-clear.
Fire tests are arranged periodically when full evacuation of all residences will be required. Posters, mobiles, Christmas decorations etc. are not permitted in kitchens as they represent a potential fire risk.
Make sure that the published fire precautions are understood and observed.
Your life may depend on your actions.
