Student Writing Mentors

Write Now
Students in learning and development centre
Need some support with a challenging assignment? Our learning mentors might be able to help.

The Write Now! writing mentor scheme is a three year project funded by the Centre for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETL).

Who are the Student Writing Mentors?

Aston University Writing Mentors work in the Learning Development Centre. They are peers or graduates who work with students to develop their academic writing skills. Writing Mentors are appointed following an interview and initial selection task - they all receive training prior to working with students.

Who do Student Writing Mentors work with?

Writing Mentors work with all Aston University students. They are not necessarily trained in English Second Language teaching or in supporting students with additional needs, such as dyslexia. You can access alternative services if you require support in these areas.

What do Student Writing Mentors do?

Writing Mentors will act as a supportive and friendly listener whilst you are working on a written assignment - helping you to develop your approach to academic writing and the way you convey information. The Mentors can help you to:

  • Develop an understanding of the writing process
  • Develop a critical approach to writing
  • Improve assignment structure
  • Clarify and organise ideas
  • Understand academic style, language and conventions
  • Identify strategies to improve approaches to writing

What can’t Student Writing Mentors do?

Writing Mentors do not:

  • Proofread
  • Correct or make changes to an assignment
  • Evaluate or ‘mark’ assignments

The mentors do not act as subject specialists - if you need advice on subject content, you should see a lecturer or tutor in your School.

Writing Mentors do not have the time during a mentoring session to look at a whole assignment. As such it is important to come prepared for your mentoring session – please see our page on preparing for a student Writing Mentor session.

Are the mentor sessions confidential?

All Writing Mentor sessions are confidential. A Writing Mentor may suggest that you to seek advice from other Aston University staff but will not discuss any issues without your consent.

How can I make an appointment?

The Writing Mentor service operates on a self-referral basis. If you would like to make an appointment, contact us.
