Workshops forĀ All Students

This semester, the Learning Development Centre is launching a new series of workshops which are open to ALL STUDENTS and focus on a variety of academic skills. Each session is timetabled for 2 hours, from 1.30pm—3.30pm and consists of some tutor input, discussion and activities. There will also be time for independent study and an opportunity to discuss questions with an advisor.

Workshop 1: Presentation Skills and Poster Presentations

Wednesday 8th February 1.30pm - 3.30pm (ref. no.450)

This session highlights the core components of effective slide show and poster presentations, in terms of structure/content and delivery. The session also provides an opportunity to prepare and deliver a very short presentation and receive some feedback and advice from our tutors.

Workshop 2: Strategies for Speaking in Groups

Wednesday 15th February 1.30pm - 3.30pm (ref. no.451)

This session is particularly useful for those who do not have English as a first language and may not feel confident speaking in groups. The session will involve a number of speaking exercises and depending on the number of attendees, a debate. The intention is to provide an opportunity for you to develop your confidence and practice speaking within a group.

Workshop 3: Implementing Assessment Feedback

Wednesday 22nd February 1.30pm - 3.30pm (ref. no.452)

This session explores features of assessment criteria, discusses and elaborates on key terms and techniques which could be used to demonstrate the criteria within academic writing. You will also be encouraged to identify areas for improvement and techniques you can use to develop your own writing.

*You should bring along one or more piece/s of completed work, along with any relevant feedback and assessment criteria.

Workshop 4: Proofreading and Editing

Wednesday 29th February 1.30pm - 3.30pm (ref. no.453) 

This session highlights features of good academic and critical writing. It will then introduce and provide opportunities to practice a number of proofreading and editing strategies.

*It would be useful if you could bring along a sample piece of writing with you (complete and marked OR something which you are working on. Please note that we are unable to provide a proofreading service.      

Workshop 5: Referencing and Avoiding Plagiarism

Wednesday 7th March 1.30pm - 3.30pm (ref. no.454)

By explaining the purpose of referencing, this session provides students with the opportunity to learn how to identify and avoid plagiarism through a number of activities. The tutor will also direct you to a number of practical resources.

*If you have any referencing queries about a particular piece of work, there should be opportunity to provide you with some advice during the session. 

Workshop 6: Exams and Revision   

Wednesday 14th March 1.30pm - 3.30pm (ref. no.455)

Guidance on planning revision/study timetables, explanations of different types of exams, information about useful memory and revision techniques are provided during this session.

*If you bring some material for revision with you and/or your revision/exam timetable – our tutors will be present to assist with planning or providing tips to improve revision.
