In 2006, the University made a decision to bring together a range of existing learning support initiatives funded by Widening Participation (WP) and Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund (TQEF) into one central service
This was further supported by Aston’s involvement in the ‘Write Now!’ Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (http://www.writenow.ac.uk), which aims to improve student achievement through the development of innovative, evidence-based provision focused on writing for assessment.
It is the mission of the Learning Development Centre to help all Aston students (pre- and post entry) develop the skills necessary for their own academic and professional success. We seek to enhance the learning experience in both a physical and virtual way. We provide a flexible environment that encourages independent study and group work. Services available from the LDC include;
- Advice on writing for assignments and research
- Maths drop-in centre
- General study skills guidance
- Development of programming skills
- A flexible environment that encourages independent study and group work
Our experienced staff deliver a programme of workshops throughout the year, one-to-one study skills tutorials and a drop in service (i.e no appointment is necessary) for individual maths support.
The LDC supports the role that technology plays in enhancing learning, and provides a range of online resources and equipment, such as wireless Internet access, laptop computers, and bookable audio visual equipment. Expert advice is also available for students requiring adaptive software and technologies.
