Brief
Lindsay brought us in on a 2-part project to support her students, whom she had
tasked with making their own videos about a particular facet of laboratory
technique and procedure. The instructional videos would be used in subsequent
years by new students, and would be added to by students each time the module
was taught. The students wrote their own scripts, then an MLT crew filmed them
demonstrating the procedure and we matched that footage with an audio recording
of each student narrating their video. In one case, we supported one student
who wrote, filmed and edited three videos herself, providing short tutorial
lessons on camerawork and editing. The videos were digitally encoded and
delivered to the students; in all cases, the videos and the production process
were marked as part of the students’ work in that module.
Products
We assisted 5 students in this project. We made 4 videos (on micropipetting,
adjusting pH, aseptic technique and the protein standard curve) and supported
one student to make her own videos on serial dilution, inoculating a streak
plate and Gram staining.
