Human Tissue Practical Experiments and Kidney Animation (2010)

Client

A CLIPP Project for Dr Rhein Parri, Lecturer in Pharmacology and Dr David Poyner, Reader in Pharmacology, School of Life& Health Sciences

Brief

We were asked to film 4 experiments for the Pharmacology team which used human tissue fluids; naturally these experiments cannot be conducted time and time again for each pharmacy student cohort, so that every student can have a good close view. A 2D animation was also commissioned from us to illustrate The Counter-Current Multiplier, a specific renal function that was particularly time consuming to explain to students. The videos were intended for online video delivery via the university VLE, in order to replace tutors having to repeatedly demonstrate them live.

Products

The 4 videos were filmed in the teaching labs as direct presentations to camera by the lecturers, as a translation of the live lectures to a video. The 2D graphic video was storyboarded and scripted, then voiced by David Poyner, and animated by our graphic designer. Some of the 4 videos were edited into chapters for easy viewing, then encoded for upload to the Blackboard VLE. The animation took longer to finalise (due to the complexity of the physiological process) but was delivered over Summer 2010 and in use by the teaching staff from Autumn Term 2010.
