Future prospects for the new batch of West Midlands’ graduates appear brighter, thanks to the success of Aston University’s Graduate Internship Programme.
A total of 17 graduates have been placed in a range of roles across Aston University this summer, as part of an internship scheme run by Graduate Advantage. These opportunities varied from purchasing to translation work and research projects, depending on the skills of the graduates and the needs of the departments in the University.
Daniel Crehan, who spent his six-weeks working for the Purchasing Team, gave this view of his internship: “I believe that the knowledge and range of skills that I have developed over the course of my internship will be hugely beneficial to me as I begin my career. I thoroughly recommend completing an internship to other students/graduates looking to gain exposure to the working environment, as I believe that this experience will be of great benefit to me in the future.”
Chrissie Govette, PA to deputy director of finance/administration in the Finance & Business Services team commented on Daniel: “During his time with us, Daniel has worked on promoting the purchasing policy and actively encouraged purchasing best practice through ensuring regulation compliance. In terms of progress, we feel that he has developed a good understanding for work prioritisation, provision of customer service and delivering value for money. In addition, he has been able to look at purchasing activities from an external perspective and provide valuable insight into how we can make our systems more accessible and user friendly.”
Helen Higson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for external relations at Aston University, added: “In a time of cutbacks and low recruitment levels, the Programme is having an enormous impact on the overall strategy of the University both now and looking to the future. It is great having someone who can bring fresh and innovative ideas to a department.”
Funded by Advantage West Midlands (AWM), Graduate Advantage is made up currently of 5 projects and aims to deliver in excess of 2000 placements by March 2011. All of these projects offer paid placements with subsidies of up to £800 to help the employer pay their intern and cover a range of different sectors including: low carbon, professional services, digital industry and many more.To date, Graduate Advantage has achieved in excess of 1800 placements.
