Thesis Title: The impact of impliciit Leadership Theories and Lender-Member value congruence on leadership effectiveness and organisational outcomes
Research Keywords:
Followership, Implicit Leadership Theories, Values
Research Description:
The research generally has three objectives. The first objective is concerned with the level of measurement of Implicit Leadership Theories. Principally, drawing on leadership categorisation theory (Lord, Foti and de Vader, 1984), it is suggested that the measurement of ILTs at the job-related level, that is measuring cognitive schemes of ideal leadership for a specific job, will have a better predictive value of psychological and organisational outcomes than general ILT measurement. Second, the ILT congruence between leaders and followers, both actual and as perceived by the followers, is suggested to be positively related to employee reactions and performance, and this relationship proposed to be mediated by Leader-Member Exchange quality. Finally, leader-follower value congruence is suggested to be predictive of psychological and organisational outcomes, mediated by Leader-Member Exchange quality. The proposed relationships will be tested through a research program comprising of three empirical, cross-sectional quantitative studies.
