Profile
I joined Aston University as a full-time member of staff in 2008 having previously worked as a Sessional Lecturer within the Finance, Accounting and Law group at ABS. After graduating from University College London I spent five years at Birmingham City Law School, where I worked as a Lecturer in Law and chaired the Teaching and Learning Innovation Research Group.
Outstanding Teaching
In 2009 I received the Aston Business School, Inspiration and Innovation Award for my innovations in teaching and learning.
In 2011 I was awarded Outstanding Teacher of the year at the Aston Excellence Awards. This year I have been nominated for a National Teaching Fellowship...fingers crossed!
My teaching and research interests spread across the following areas:
- Teaching and Learning Innovation
- Criminal Law & Medical Law
- Business Ethics
Business Ethics for Schools
Law and ethics are inextricably linked and all professions and organisations need a solid understanding of the legal and regulatory framework in which they operate.
Knowledge of the law alone however, is insufficient in order to negotiate the complex web of relationships that we enter into in our professional lives. Business leaders and professionals also need to understand their ethical and social responsibilities!
Each year I hold Business Ethics Taster Lectures for school children and college students to introduce them to the dynamic and exciting area of business ethics.
Here are some comments from students at Worcester Sixth Form College and what they thought about the Taster Lecture and their visit to Aston University in in December 2011:
'I loved it. It was very interesting and enjoyable and at the same time informative.'
'Really enjoyable, engaging and fun, I had a great day.'
'Exceptional! I want to study here now!'
Highly engaging and informative. Excellent!'

I also run a number of Masterclasses for local students interested in studying law at university. These taster sessions give students a taste of what studying law at university could be like. The Masterclasses explore the criminal law and self defence. As a martial artist I ensure the sessions are high impact and hands on! View the current Master Class schedule
Self Defence and the Law
Self-defence and personal safety training is for everyone; not just 'sporty types'. Having trained in a number of martial arts, including kickboxing and tae kwondo, I believe that knowledge of how to protect yourself and the people that you care about is empowering. In 2012 I am embarking on a mission to demonstrate that everyone no matter how fit, how small or uncoordinated (that is me by the way), can learn effective self-defence; that is emergency skills for emergency situations!
As part of this mission I am launching a series of short courses with Unite Tae Kwondo in 2012, which are free for Aston students and staff to attend. These courses are part-theory, during which we teach participants how to reduce the risk of becoming involved in a dangerous, potentially violent situation and what the law stipulates. The remainder is strictly 'hands on' and we teach participants practical and effective techniques that everyone can use to defend themselves.
These courses are suitable for men and women of all ages and fitness levels.
