Profile

James came to Aston University in September 2009, having previously held posts as senior lecturer in property law at University of Buckingham, London Metropolitan University and London South Bank University. He practised at the Bar of England and Wales from 1990-2002, covering many areas of civil and criminal practice, but specialising mainly in property law litigation. His  teaching interests lie in land law, equity and trusts, landlord and tenant law, housing law and commercial leases. He is Director of Legal Research, Director of Mooting at Aston Law and module leader for Land Law and Equity and Trusts.

Missing Persons Group

In 2011, I was invited to attended a Parliamentary Meeting of the Cross-Parliamentary Missing Persons Group in late 2010 and the follow on Parliamentary Inquiry, , at the House of Commons. This Inquiry was aimed at looking into the practical and legal implications of when people go missing. I was particularly keen to assist the Meeting and subsequent Inquiry insofar as it looked into the legal problems encountered when people go missing, in particular the legal implications for the missing person and their friends and family. The existing law relating to Missing Persons is not fit for purpose. This whole area is ripe for law reform and is currently before Parliament, gaining cross party support, where the existing law relating to the 7 year presumption of death and the issue of managing a missing persons legal affairs, in the short term, is being considered.
