As part of our taught MSc Marketing Management and European Masters in Management programmes, students will complete a significant piece of work in the form of a practice-based dissertation. This practice-based dissertation enables students to examine a topic in greater depth than is possible during the taught part of the course.
The practice-based dissertation helps students develop skills in defining a topic area, selecting appropriate methodologies, finding and managing relevant data, planning a complex piece of work, making a critical analysis and presenting a well-structured, lucid report with appropriate conclusions.
More than any other element of the course, the practice-based dissertation provides students with the opportunity to study, on their own initiative and in detail, a subject which is not only of particular interest, but which has the potential to contribute powerfully to their personal development.
Practice-based dissertation work supports the MSc in Marketing Management and The European Masters in Management. The MSc in Marketing Management, in particular, is a very popular course. It is essential that you apply early to give yourself the best chance to obtain a place.
Practice- Based Dissertatio Topic and Proposal
A practice-based dissertation is a substantial piece of research integrating academic theory with practice.
In Term 1, students will be required to prepare a practice-based dissertation proposal, including (1) a brief background to the dissertation topic area and justification for the research (i.e. why the topic is important, and what is already known about the topic area); (2) a statement of the intended methods to be used in the practice-based dissertation; and (3) a conclusion indicating the next stages of the dissertation process. Students will then spend Terms 2 and 3 completing their practice-based dissertation with support from members of the Marketing Group.
