Experts from Aston Business School have been appointed by Manchester Enterprises, the economic development agency for Greater Manchester, in a £130,000 project to research the relationship between local investment and inward investment in their region.
Professor Nigel Driffield, an expert in regional economic strategy and head of the economics and strategy group at Aston Business School
said “This sort of work is about identifying the engines for regional
growth and discovering what is holding that growth back. Only with that
information can a region create a successful strategy to drive itself
forward.”
The project will evaluate investment rates in Manchester
with comparable cities, aiming to identify the nature of the
relationship between domestic and foreign investment. It will also look
at spill over between inward investment and domestic firms within the
local economy, between Manchester and the surrounding area and Manchester and the rest of the UK.
Professor Driffield added “We are delighted to be awarded this project. I believe it is Aston Business School’s reputation for this type of work that has encouraged Manchester look to the West Midlands for this expertise. Some could view our region as a competitor to Manchester,
but in fact every region has its individual strengths and attractions
for investment – this is all about a regional development agency
expanding their knowledge base, identifying where future investment has
to come from.”
