Recognising Business Excellence

BE
Every year Aston Business School recognises the achievements of talented students and graduates at an exclusive awards ceremony.  During the ceremony the School’s brightest undergraduate students are awarded prizes in recognition of their outstanding efforts during their studies.  In addition to receiving these awards, students are also able to meet and talk to successful alumni who are invited to share the benefit of their experiences.

During the 2012 ceremony in January, Aston MBA graduate Mohammed Hasan was honoured with a special Beta Gamma Sigma award.  Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) is a prestigious international honour society for students and staff of business schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. Aston University is the first institution in the UK to be allied with Beta Gamma Sigma.  Mohammed received the BGS Honouree Chapter Award in recognition of his career achievements and his support of Aston University.

Mohammed has built a successful career in the property industry during a difficult period for the industry and is currently engaged as an Advisor with a number of the UK's most successful companies.  Until September 2011, he was Associate Director at Abstract Group of Companies (one of the UK's leading commercial property development, investment and advisory groups). Abstract is a keynote investor in Birmingham having developed Colmore Plaza which attracted Carlyle Private Equity to the city for its first major real estate investment.  Mohammad is a dedicated supporter of the University, serving on the Development Board and he also serves as a council member of the Taxpayer's Alliance in the West Midlands.

During the evening students also heard inspirational speeches from recent graduates Michael Bandar and Akmal Saleem who have both made great strides towards success in an entrepreneurial manner, very recently after graduating

Michael graduated with a BSc International Business and Management in 2011 and is Founder and Director of My Health Cards, a service which allows sufferers of allergies and intolerances to create bespoke cards detailing their exact requirements, enabling waiter and chefs to understand and cater for thier dietary needs.

Akmal Saleem graduated in BSc Marketing in the class of 2009, and is currently running a digital marketing agency, Brand786.co.uk.  His company has secured work with companies such as Vodafone and Subway. He has also created a brand and web presence for a company that was featured on BBC’s hit show Dragons Den, CompareTheCoffin.com, amongst a number of other web development, strategic branding, email marketing, creative design and conversion rate optimisation projects.

The underlying message in all three speeches was – "it's not what you do, it's how you do it"

The June 25, 2011 installation ceremony, conducted by the Sejong University School of Business and the Sejong-Syracuse Global MBA program, was highlighted by the induction of 29 new Society Members.

Sejong Univeristy President Woo Hee Park congratulated the newly inducted BGS members, stressing the importance of the ceremony as a sign of Sejong University’s commitment to be at the forefront of business education. He also thanked both faculty and graduates for their outstanding contribution towards spreading the good name of the school by achieving membership of such a prestigious society, pointing out the global perspective that it gives to Sejong University.

On February 15, 2011, Beta Gamma Sigma held its second annual membership-wide Founders' Week Webinar. The online session focused on the various ways that the Society can benefit its members now and throughout their careers. If you missed the webinar, a recording is now available on the BGS website.
