New Floating Cycle Shop arrives in City Centre Canal basin

At midday on 28 September Cycle Chain's new floating cycle shop will be pulled into Cambrian Wharf by members of West Midlands Police Rugby team, the National Champions.
Housed on a former cargo longboat named Carina, Cycle Chain will repair, sell and hire refurbished bicycles from its city centre canalside mooring at Cambrian Wharf situated just East of the NIA, behind the Birmingham Rep Theatre.
The vessel has been provided at nominal cost by Canal and River Trust (formerly British Waterways) whilst Centro have financed Carina's restoration. Cycle Chain, a social enterprise began refurbishing donated and unclaimed bikes in 2002; founder, former amateur racing cyclist and lecturer, John Shaw explained: “I was working with and training cycle mechanics who were partially sighted; it became obvious that there is a great potential in using bike restoration as a medium for teaching people with various disabilities, not just fixing bikes but learning important skills of communication, teamwork, dealing with customers, and applying themselves to something with a positive end product for which there is endless demand.”

“Now we are setting up our own floating shop we will continue restoring and selling bikes, with our mechanic trainer and trainees from a local college.”

“We will be offering 'park and service' deals for cycling commuters who need a repair, and cycle hire. The canalsides are an interesting environment to explore and we will progress to leading bike trails and guided groups."

New Cycling & Walking Map

New Cycling and Walking Map
In September the City Council is due to launch a brand new Cycling and Walking Map for Birmingham. Switching from the current A to Z map base to OS, the new map will give much greater flexibility for the planning and promotion of cycling and walking routes.
The new Cycling and Walking Map will feature the Bike Birmingham branding and contain new and up to date cycling information. By moving to an OS base the Smarter Choices Team will be able to provide companies with a bespoke Cycling and Walking Map to their location.

Summer update

Dear all, Hope you managed to get some fair weather cycling in over the summer. The AstBUG changing facilities now have repaired showers, and we are planning to double the number of lockers by replacing some of the larger ones with half height alternatives. If you have any items(or locks) in the lockers please remove them this week so we can swap them ASAP. The next bike sale and green travel event will be on Tuesday 25th September from 14:30 in G8. We will also be updating the loan cycle form and reporting. Please check the AstBUG blog for more details and follow-up comments. Tim PS. Rea route still has detour at DogPool Lane, and roadwork hazards on the cyclepath before Gooch St. crossing.
