Aston People

It’s our people who make Aston a great place to live, work and study.

In 2007 Aston commissioned a collection of 50 portraits to celebrate the diversity and achievements of our staff and students. Meet some of Aston's people…

What I most like about working at Aston University is that it’s  friendly and supportive, like a big family in many respects.

Birmingham is great, the people are genuine, unpretentious - you know where you are with them and they accept you as you are. I am proud to call Birmingham my home.

I am a scientist. I want people to share my fascination with science. It is about everything around us and how we live our lives.

Having led a rather demure and reclusive life, I came to Aston with a view to change all that! I can honestly say that having a whole dozen people say hi to you whilst walking between the library and Main Building, is one of the greatest feelings ever!

In my opinion Birmingham stands high as one of Europe's leading capitals of culture. The vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere is what has made Birmingham the great city it is today.

Aston University is a great place to work. It's a small, tight knit community of warm hearted staff who really care about their students. My role involves practical support for students if things go wrong. I provide information, give advice and represent students if they need help. I specialise in academic problems and also in immigration advice for international students.

I value the city's multiculturalism which is one of Birmingham's strengths. Birmingham has lots of green spaces, decent transport links and a great shopping centre. People here are friendly and tolerant.

Julia - studying Human Psychology

Through my four years of study at Aston I have found that there is always a friendly face, whether it's a student or a lecturer. I feel that this is because Aston creates its own community of which people love being a part. Aston is known for its quality of teaching, so I was not surprised to find this, but I was surprised to feel 'part of the family' in such a big city, it's like a home from home.

I see Aston as a 'mini' Birmingham: both provide the opportunity to expand experiences and meet a diverse group of people - an opportunity lost in many smaller cities.

In 2007 I was awarded the British Psychological Society Student Members Group first prize for my final year research on academic sibling rivalry (influenced by my continual academic rivalry with my older sister)!

I enjoy working at Aston because of its friendly, student focused approach.

I was an undergraduate and post-graduate student at Aston,  but actually left school at 16 to join the RAF. By accepting me as a mature student (20 years after I left school) Aston gave me the opportunity to 'get my life back'  following the onset of Multiple Sclerosis. Aston welcomed me for my ability and made sure my disability didn't get in the way of my studying. Now I have a PhD and a future!

What I most like about studying at Aston University is that it’s warm. Because of its relatively small size, the student – teacher relationship is more than a casual “Good morning”. Students are able to speak freely, creating a very comfortable atmosphere for learning, leaving both the teachers and students satisfied.
