Talented teenagers from across the UK will have the chance
to ‘spend’ £300 million of ‘Treasury money’, when they work alongside
Aston University academics, next week.
Up to 25 students will be working with members of Her Majesty’s
Treasury, and Aston Business School academics and students as part of
Warwick University’s Goal Programme. Its aim is to offer advice and
support to gifted and talented students whose families have little or
no background in higher education.
The three day residential Money and Management course, from October
28 to October 30, will see teams of students facing the fictional task
of representing different government departments. They will be creating
an imaginative budget for the Treasury and persuading a panel of HM
Treasury staff on how to best spend a fictional £300m of public money.
The teenagers will be working with Aston Business School academic,
Dr Josie Kelly, meeting with Rolls Royce’s business team and visiting
Her Majesty’s Treasury, in London, as part of the experience.
Angela Morris, Aston University’s Excellence Hub and Gifted and
Talented Coordinator said the aim was to help youngsters between the
ages of 14 and 18 to develop their self esteem, gain confidence and to
encourage their next steps into higher education.
“This event is a fantastic opportunity for students to visit a
university, meet with current undergraduates and to gain hands on
business experience from experts. We want to offer an insight into the
wide range of study opportunities and career paths out there, which
students may not have considered beforehand,” she said.
The Goal programme is entirely funded through philanthropic
donations and offers free access to events, unique learning
opportunities and online distance learning.
