13 October 2008 – for immediate release
Aston Student Village (ASV) has signed a contract with
Carillion plc for the construction of Phase One of its £214m project to
transform the Aston University campus.
This contract, worth £57m, will see Carillion build two residential
blocks on the south side of campus, providing 1300 high-specification,
en suite bedrooms. Phase I will also deliver an all-weather sports
pitch, 240 car parking spaces and the relocation of chaplaincy
facilities. Rooms will be made available from late 2010 and Lewis and
Hickey is the architect behind the project.
Guppy Dhariwal from ASV, said, ‘We’re delighted to have signed the
contract with Carillion. We have made good progress over the Summer,
preparing the site for the construction, and are now looking forward to
seeing the residences develop over the next two years. I am confident
that Carillion will deliver high quality results on budget and on time.’
Phase I will be followed immediately by Phase II of the project.
This will see the removal of Aston University’s 1960s residential
towers, and the construction of two new, modern blocks to the west of
campus. This will account for a further 1100 en suite rooms, meaning
the project will deliver 2400 new rooms in total, taking the number on
campus to over 3000. This work is due for completion in 2014.
The residential blocks for both Phases have been designed with the
environment in mind. They will use the latest energy-efficient
materials and systems, and also benefit from cutting-edge,
environmentally-friendly features such as green roofs, wind turbines, a
Combined Heat and Power Plant and rain water recycling.
Guppy Dhariwal is enthusiastic about the finished scheme: ‘This
project will transform the Aston campus. It enables the University to
further improve the service it provides to its students and enhance
their enjoyment of their time at Aston. This is a very important
development for the University.’
