Lithuanians living in the Midlands will be able to
participate in their national elections for the first time this year
thanks to an agreement between the Lithuanian Embassy and Aston
University in Birmingham.
A special polling station will open at the University on October
12th. Aston University was invited to take part in the elections after
the Lithuanian Ambassador visited the University to give a lecture
earlier this year.
There are just seven poling stations for the elections in the UK,
including the one at Aston (four in London, one in Peterborough and one
in Armagh). Aston will be the only University in the UK to be used as a
polling station. There is a thriving population of around 50 Lithuanian
students currently at the University.
David Tobin, who is one of Aston’s International Officers, said:
‘The West Midlands has become a home from home for a growing number
of Lithuanians and so, as a service to our Baltic community, we will
host a polling station for the October parliamentary elections here on
the Aston campus.
‘Our University is home to a global community of international
students from over a hundred countries across the world, including many
Lithuanian students. Some of these students will help out on the day
and are keen to get involved. ‘
Local Lithuanian residents who would like to participate in the elections can visit the Embassy‘s website at www.lithuanianembassy.co.uk
to download a registration form. This can be returned via email at
rinkimai@lithuanianembassy.co.uk or fax to 020 7486 6403. In order to
send a ballot paper the embassy needs requires a correct postal address
for voters. People can indicate on the registration form whether they
wish to vote via post or in person at Aston University.
