Aston University’s highly regarded Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) society recently held its first ceremony of the year for its 73 new members entering at a Master’s and Doctoral level.
Aston Business School gained its Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation in 2003 and it is this accreditation which has enabled the University to establish a Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter in 2005, the first of its kind in the UK.
The Beta Gamma Sigma society was first established in America in 1913, and now spans four continents. It seeks to encourage and recognise academic achievement in the study of business, and also fosters both personal and professional excellence among its worldwide network of members.
All postgraduate students selected for membership of BGS were in the top 20% of their year and all Doctoral students successfully completing a PhD were also eligible to join.
The BGS ceremony was sponsored by Deloitte & Touche LLP and attended by 160 people. The ceremony also recognised Mr Tim Watts, Chief Executive, Pertemps Ltd, as an Honorary member of BGS, for his continued commitment to commerce.
Following the prestigious ceremony, each newly inducted member becomes eligible for a number of benefits from BGS Head Quarters in America. These benefits include access to BGS’s website (Betanet), a year’s free online subscription to Business Week and access to the online central job board, giving access to numerous Employer links.
In addition to this, Stephanie Meek, Faculty Officer for BGS at Aston University described how Aston will be offering additional benefits to its student members by saying:
‘While BGS offers a plethora of opportunities for its members on a centralised basis, here at Aston we are in the process of developing an exclusive benefits package for our members. Even though this is still in its infancy, we have already linked up with some of the larger professional organisations like PWc to offer skills sessions exclusively for BGS members.’
