Alan Charters is Executive Director of Capital Developments at Aston, where he leads on Estate Management and all new Capital Developments.
Alan has over 35 years’ experience in the construction industry. He started his career as a ‘trainee site engineer’ with Tarmac, and between Tarmac (now Carillion) and Balfour Beatty, spent over 20 years working his way through a construction career ladder which saw him become a Senior Project Manager; controlling contracts up to a value of and exceeding £20m for various prestige clients such as Barclays Bank; Steeley Industrial Estates; Birmingham City Council; Embassy Developments; Brixton Estates and Rolls-Royce.
Going into construction consultancy work in the mid 1990’s working for both Vector Management and Gardiner & Theobald, where he was a partner; his work included the Bullring redevelopment and also an expansion and refurbishment of Birmingham prison. He says this was ‘one of the most satisfying jobs as he was able to see the project run from start to finish. It was delivered on time and under budget and it was also a very challenging experience due to the stringent security issues and unusual environment’.
Alan Charters joined the University as Aston’s new Director of Capital Developments in November 2009. His position as Director of Capital Developments was a brand new position, with responsibility to manage all of the University’s major construction developments from start to finish; from receiving ideas for development from colleagues, ensuring that they are managed through the process and become a reality. This involves defining what the project is, finding a suitable space, involving stakeholders, dealing with the logistics, the physical construction work and completing it before the Estates team look after it on a day-to-day basis. Part of Alan's job is about process and procedures but the largest part is about people management and getting the best out of the teams I work with in order to get projects completed on time.
In February 2010, he became responsible for the wider estate management with a view to improve the general service level achieved by the wider Estates team in conjunction with a focus on delivering the Estates Masterplan which will transform the whole campus. These major, truly transformational, challenges allow Alan to fully draw on his years of experience.
