Bhangra Society Flash Mob

Expanding Horizons has helped provide new traditional Bhangra costumes for the Aston University Bhangra Society and society members have recently performed a flash mob routine on campus.

The 15 minute routine was choreographed by Prabhdeep Bhopal who currently dances and performs for an established Bhangra Group – Gabhru Panjab De - and is currently the teacher for Aston Bhangra Society.

The performance included dancing, Dhol (traditional Panjabi drum) players and speeches from the Students’ Guild Entertainments Team.

Prabhdeep Bhopal, Aston Bhangra Society, said: “I really enjoyed doing the flash mob outside the Students' Guild. It was a great opportunity to share the Punjabi culture and to showcase the Bhangra dance form. After the flash mob, I ran a Bhangra workshop for all to get involved with and it was enjoyed by many. Participants were taught about the Punjab, the history of Bhangra and also ten dance moves.

"Aston Bhangra Society has been running for five years and we have never been able to afford traditional Bhangra costumes. With our grant from Expanding Horizons we have purchased these. Having traditional costumes has had such a huge impact in our performances, adding more colour, energy and finesse to our performances. We really feel like a team now!”
