The future of the environment is the responsibility of all of us, both collectively and individually. The products we buy, the journeys we make, the actions we take all impact on the world around us, and it is vital that we all make a real effort to reduce the damage we are doing to the environment.
The Government's Climate Change Bill commits the UK to reduce CO2 emissions by 60 per cent by 2050. This is a positive step - but climate change scientists are now telling the developed world that we need to go further and aim for 80 per cent reduction. Whilst I am not expecting to be here in 2050, most of our current students will be, and the world of 2050 will be very much the world of their children. It is the world the next generation will live in. Action is needed at all levels - we can use our powers as citizens to ensure governments, businesses and organisations are playing their part, and we can each take a lead through personal action to ensure that the world of 2050 is a good place to live.
