Buying Greener

Turning the theory of environmental sustainability into a reality on campus is a challenge which is being tackled by the Sustainable Procurement Working Group.

The SPWG is responsible for practical initiatives to help Aston University reduce its impact on the environment, and in particular is looking at how the purchasing process can play its part, both in terms of the products we buy (or don’t buy), and the suppliers we use. Their work is guided by our Sustainable Procurement Policy.

The Group has secured agreement to use only 100% recycled paper across the University and has also organised and participated in events such as their Environmental Day in February 2008 and the 2009 Aston Green&Fair event. The SPWG is also working on our waste management contracts, IT equipment, and working towards Level 1 of the Sustainable Procurement Flexible Framework.

As part of our purchasing, Aston University is also committed to promoting and supplying Fairtrade products. Thanks to the hard work of the Fairtrade Steering Group, Aston has been a Fairtrade University, certified by the Fairtrade Foundation, since 2007. For more information have a look at the Aston Fairtrade pages.
