Aston's 10:10 suggestion competition
Back in 2010, to help us kick start our 10:10 campaign, we asked Aston staff and students to submit their energy-saving ideas to help us achieve a 10% saving. Even those ideas that might seem insignificant can have a huge effect when you've got 1400 staff and 9000 students taking part!
After much deliberation, our two winning ideas were….
Staff winner: Jill Forrest – set aside space for green roofs.
2012 UPDATE: Green roofs are something we are particularly keen in here at Aston. The first phase of Aston Student Villages has a green roof above the chaplaincy and the second phase includes plans for a brown roof which will provide a valuable habitat for Black Redstarts. In addition to this, the second phase of the Woodcock redevelopment includes plans for a green wall.
Student winner: Vlad Mackevic – organise an awards ceremony for staff, to encourage green behaviour.
2012 UPDATE: Following this suggestion, the Go Green Awards were launched, and successfully run in 2010 and 2011. The awards for 2012 will launch in September. If you're interested in getting involved, you can find out more here.
We spent a lot of time considering all the suggestions that were put forward and hope to be able to follow up on a good many of them. We thought these two suggestions in particular were very innovative and yet were initiatives that it would be possible for us to implement.
