AstBUG Update - June 2009

Update on Initiatives

  • Planning has been agreed for the 6 new cycle and motorcycle shelters on campus which will provide around 100 new spaces. The locations and design were agreed after consultation with AstBUG and the installation should be completed within the next 3 months.

  • To make life easier for individuals cycling to and from the campus, plans for new changing, showering, drying and storage facilities are being drawn up. Funding is now being sought, but it is hoped that work can start on these soon.  

  • The Aston campus sustainable transport map is now available for staff, students and visitors. The map details cycle routes, cycle parking locations, pedestrian access points and public transport nodes. For a pdf version click here; paper copies are available at points around campus.

On Your Bike – Promoting Cycling

  • AstBUG and the Environment and Sustainability Team have now run two very successful “On Your Bike” events to promote cycling to staff and students.

  • Cycle Chain, who are a charity working with visually impaired people from Queen Alexandra College, have been on site selling cheap second hand bikes, which proved to be very popular.
  • AstBUG signed up around 30 new members, both staff and students.
  • The plan for next year is to organise these events on a regular basis – if you have any comments on this please contact v.johnsen1@aston.ac.uk. 

 

National Bike Week 2009

  • This year National Bike Week took place from the 13th June to the 21st June.

  • AstBUG ran buddy rides each morning to the University to arrive in time for the Cyclists Breakfast. We gave out around 60 breakfast vouchers and signed up some new AstBUG members.

  • Cycle Chain were back on campus, selling second hand bikes and offering basic repairs.

  • The Environment and Sustainability Team gave an update on cycle facilities at Aston, including the cycle shelters and initial plans for the new changing rooms.

Future plans


As of next year, we plan to work with Cycle Chain to organise regular On Your Bike events, selling second-hand bikes and giving out information. In particular we hope to run two events during the first term Welcome Weeks.

There may also be further opportunities to develop these events, promote the Cycle Salary Sacrifice Scheme and put in place more schemes for students.
