Aston Student Village: Sustainable campus

As a socially responsible organisation, we are mindful of our duty to the environment. The scheme gives us the opportunity to replace our inefficient accommodation towers with buildings with modern, innovative features that will help us minimise our environmental impact and reduce cost.

The new residences will be far more efficient than the current towers, with double glazing rather than single, and much more sophisticated lighting, heating and mechanical systems. This will greatly reduce the amount of energy expended by the residences, thereby reducing Aston’s impact on the environment.

We are implementing various innovative features such as greywater and wastewater recycling, green roofs and wind turbines on roofs, along with improved recycling facilities and cycling parks in each building. The University is also building a Combined Heat & Power Plant which will greatly improve our energy efficiency and virtually eliminate the need for plant in each block.

The energy challenges of the next 10 years and beyond mean that energy costs are likely to rise significantly. The innovative and up-to-date accommodation being constructed at Aston is designed to meet these challenges.
